There are growing evidences for the positive impact of mindfulness on wellbeing. Mindfulness-based mobile apps may have potential as an alternative medium for training. While there are hundreds of such apps, there is little information on their effectiveness especially on people who suffer from chronic mental health disorders.

As part of MIT AI & Mental Health Lab, we studied the potential of advancing mindfulness training by providing responsive meditative intervention modeled with stress level data from mobile keyboard inputs.

What’s Ting

Ting is a combination of a stress level detector judging from a mobile keyboard input and an interaction design intervention that offsets the stressful feeling of the user by asking the user to take 30-second micro-meditation.

Why Ting

Mobile phone is part of our life now and hard to separate, but over-using mobile devices has created a lot stress. By introducing the idea of captology, we want to "transparently" understand user’s stress while using the phone and intervene subtly to improve this situation.
